The Department of English offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees, which provide a thorough education in literature through the ages, while also focusing on literature of the Southwest. Students may choose to minor in English or professional writing.
We offer the only English secondary teacher-training program in the region in conjunction with the university’s School of Education. We also provide training for elementary education through the English major and minor.
Students can gain first-hand editorial publishing experience working for Picayune Literary Magazine, the department’s literary journal, which attracts national and international submissions.

One of the fastest growing career choices for English graduates is in the business sector, including management and human resources. Further, English degrees provide an excellent foundation for law school and other graduate programs.
Our rigorous M.A. program prepares students to pursue doctoral programs in English and creative writing, and we offer the only college and secondary teacher-training program in freshman composition in the region. Along with teaching composition, graduate students tutor in the Gina Briefs-Elgin Writing Center.
Our dedicated and diverse faculty has extensive expertise in creative writing, literature of the Southwest, contemporary linguistics and sociolinguistics, British literature from Old English to the present day, Chicano/a discourse, multiethnic American literature, Postcolonial and Anglophone literatures, and more.
