Geographic Information System Certificate

The GIS minor and certificate program at New Mexico Highlands University provides hands-on experience with the latest geographic information system technology that can immediately be applied in the workplace, provide a highly marketable skill-base when seeking employment or pursuing an advanced degree in GIS. Students who complete either program will be highly prepared to use map data for decision-making in business, environmental protection, risk assessment, utility planning and management, emergency response, land use planning, transportation planning, delivery route planning, real estate, crime prevention, and many more.

Opportunities for Employment
Students who graduate with a GIS minor or from the GIS certificate program can look forward to several rapidly growing fields in geospatial technology such as cartography, database design and spatial analysis, health care, public works, natural and historical resources, environmental management, geologic mapping, and other fields.

Why Highlands?
New Mexico Highlands will soon unveil its state-of-the-art Geospatial Applications in Natural Sciences lab, which will include ESRI ArcGIS, Integraph Erdas Imagine and Leica Photogrammetry Suite, Trimble eCognition, and Trimble Pathfinder Office. The lab is also responsible for managing an array surveying and mapping equipment including Trimble GeoXM and GeoXT GPS units, Sokkia total stations, Garmin GPSMAP 60 and GPSMAP62 GPS units, and a Hewlett Packard DesignJet T2300 plotter/scanner.
