History at Highlands
New Mexico Highlands University offers an undergraduate major and minor in history, allowing students to pursue an enriching degree in a unique location that blends Native American, Mexican and European traditions. In fact, our students don’t have to go far to explore historical landmarks; we’re right on the path of the original Santa Fe Trail!

Career Possibilities
Our graduates have enjoyed successful careers teaching at the primary, secondary or community college level; conducting research at state, and federal organizations, including with the National Parks Service; or continuing their education at the master’s level, doctorate level or in law school. Other career possibilities include work in private and public museums; journalism; national, state and local archives; and the U.S. Department of State’s Diplomatic Service.

History majors find they have a wide selection of opportunities available because the abilities fostered by a degree in history – solid writing and thinking skills; cultural and historical literacy – are much in demand generally and can serve as a solid foundation for a wide variety of careers. Additionally, history graduates have one of the highest starting salaries for liberal arts majors, according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers.

Why Highlands?
Undergraduate history programs at larger universities are generally taught by teaching assistants. Not at New Mexico Highlands. Our students study directly with faculty who have earned their doctorates at leading universities, including Columbia, University of Texas at Austin, Northwestern. Your professors also have a passion for history and regularly present and publish their work.
