Our dynamic women’s studies minor explores the contributions women have made culturally, academically and politically. The 21-credit hour minor is multidisciplinary, with coursework offered in sociology, Latina feminism, cultural studies, media arts, criminal justice, history, literature, art history, and more.
The minor provides an excellent foundation for working in areas of gender and social justice. The women’s studies minor also provides strong preparation for success at the graduate level, with the majority of our graduates pursuing advanced degrees in sociology, public affairs, and social work.
Our women’s studies minor provides opportunities for students to link personal experiences with academic studies, social activism, and positive change. Our students gain valuable real-world professional experience through community internships that build awareness of gender issues and available support systems. The Women’s Center enriches the university and community through lecture series, movies, and celebrations like International Women’s Day.
Women’s studies is a growing discipline that provides preparation for a wide variety of rewarding careers in human rights, violence prevention, women’s advocacy, national and international women’s health, rape crisis programs, policy research, labor relations, and workforce advocacy, to name a few.
Our graduates have landed jobs with employers like the Tri-County Family Justice Center, Rape Crisis Center of Santa Fe, New Mexico Gay Straight Alliance, Girls Circle, a youth intervention program, and the university’s Campus Violence Prevention Program.
Our dedicated multidisciplinary faculty has diverse expertise on subjects including women and globalization, women and Latin American literature, women in technology and pop culture, gender and sexuality, gender and politics, 19th century women’s history, reproductive justice, women in 19th century British literature, documentary filmmaking, and more.
